A tragic incident in Michigan involved the high school bowling coach, Ryne Leist, who fatally shot one of his former athletes, Gwendolyn Smith, just days before she would have celebrated her graduation. This occurred at her stepfather’s home in Bedford Township on June 14.
Smith’s stepfather returned home around 6 PM that day and found the scene, discovering his fatally wounded stepdaughter along with Leist, who had turned the gun on himself, as stated by Sheriff Troy Goodnow.
Principal Carl Schultz from Bedford Public Schools shared heartfelt condolences, describing Smith as an “extraordinary young woman” in a post to the school community.
Smith’s stepfather honored her memory, expressing his disbelief at losing a child. He emphasized how loved she was, noting that “everyone loved Gwen.” It’s a painful reminder that parents shouldn’t have to outlive their children.
The circumstances surrounding Leist’s entry into the residence remain unclear, with authorities still investigating how he gained access.
The prosecutor’s office has ruled Smith’s death a murder, while Leist’s demise was ruled a suicide.
It’s unclear what kind of relationship Smith had with Leist. Sheriff Goodnow indicated that Smith did not perceive it as romantic.
Leist was affiliated with a local bowling club, gaining roles through local bowling alleys. However, he wasn’t an official employee of the school district and had recently resigned from his job at a bowling alley. He had passed the background checks required for youth coaches in Michigan.
Matthew Kennerson, Smith’s stepfather, had recently celebrated her graduation, sharing joyful posts on social media. In a sorrowful follow-up, he expressed his regret, stating, “I love you forever… sorry because I couldn’t save you.”
Smith was remembered for her artistic talents and outstanding athleticism, with Schultz emphasizing her vibrant spirit and kindness. The grief from this loss has deeply impacted the Bedford community, leaving many in shock.
In response to the tragedy, Schultz launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $18,000 to support Smith’s family. He noted the challenge of providing comfort during such a painful time, uncertain about how one copes with such profound loss. The community has come together, striving to support those affected in any way they can.
