11-Year-Old Suspected of Shooting Father Over Video Game

A woman, who was asleep next to her husband, woke up to a loud noise and what seemed to be liquid dripping. Turning on the light, she quickly realized it was blood. This alarming situation unfolded in a home in Pennsylvania, according to police reports.

The tragic event involved 42-year-old Douglas Dietz, who was shot by his adopted son, an 11-year-old, during a dispute over a Nintendo Switch game console.

Details from court documents reveal that the boy took a gun from a safe after becoming upset when his father ordered him to go to bed. The incident took place shortly after the family had celebrated the boy’s birthday, which adds a haunting layer to the story.

Law enforcement arrived at the South Market Street residence around 3:20 a.m. and found Dietz dead in his bedroom, having suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The bedroom of the parents was linked to the boy’s room via a closet, indicating how easily the child could access the gun.

Dietz’s wife reported a strong smell reminiscent of fireworks before discovering her husband’s condition. Shockingly, the boy entered the room and proclaimed, “Daddy’s dead,” followed by telling his mother, “I killed daddy.”

When questioned, the boy expressed he had enjoyed the day but felt anger towards his father for sending him to bed. Police documentation confirms the boy acknowledged that his father was the intended target.

During the investigation, he stated that he found the key to the gun safe while searching for his Nintendo Switch, which had previously been taken from him. He admitted to retrieving the gun, approaching his father’s side of the bed, and firing the weapon.

The young boy now faces murder charges for this tragic act.

A neighbor, Jesse Weldon, expressed his disbelief over the incident, mentioning the family had appeared very nice and kept to themselves. “I didn’t expect this,” he shared.

The boy is currently being held without bail at the Perry County Jail, while authorities delve deeper into the circumstances that led to such a horrific event. The family had adopted him in 2018 when he was just three years old.
