A 15-year-old boy has turned himself in on murder charges in a gang-related subway shooting in the Bronx last month that killed an innocent bystander and injured five others, police and sources said Monday.
The boy, whose identity has not been released because he is a minor, turned himself in at the 44th Precinct on Sunday afternoon and was charged with five counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a weapon, police and officials said.
Police said the boy was charged in connection with the shooting that took the life of Obed Beltrán Sanchez, 35, at Mt. Eden Metro Station on Feb. 12 at about 4:40 p.m. He was the third person to do so.
Police said the first person to be handcuffed was 16-year-old gangbanger Rangel Jones, who was arrested days after the shooting.
Jones is said to be a member of DBlock, a violent gang named after Davidson Avenue, which has ties to the Burnside gang over a feud over “drill rap and disrespect.” , NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney previously told reporters. Media briefing.
The gang war eventually boiled over when two crew members happened to board the same train at different stops.
In mid-March, a 14-year-old boy who was also injured in the riot explosion was arrested and charged with four counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
The boy was arrested in connection with the Jan. 15 shooting, also in the Bronx, which authorities previously said stemmed from the same gang conflict and may have triggered the subway incident. It was announced that there was.
When gunfire erupted outside the train, Sanchez, who was not involved, made the mistake of looking out from the platform to see what the commotion was about, Kenney said at the time.
The police official added that people were “just walking past him.”
“This is a man who was just going about his job trying to make it in his life, and he made the mistake of wanting to know what was going on, and it hurt his heart,” Kenney said.
Sanchez, described by police as homeless, was originally from Mexico and had family there.
In addition to the 14-year-old alleged shooter, a 14-year-old girl, a 29-year-old woman, and two men, ages 28 and 71, were also injured but later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. shooting.
