Boy airlifted from trail on South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona

A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after being rescued from Arizona’s South Mountain, and authorities have warned about the dangers of hiking in the extreme heat, fire officials confirmed to Fox News Digital.

According to Phoenix Fire Chief Sean Dubois, firefighters were called to the Mormon Trailhead on South Mountain, a mountain range in central south Phoenix, around 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

Authorities say the boy suffered heat stroke while hiking on the trail.

“Early reports suggest [the child] Maybe he was here with his relatives. [visiting] “They were from out of town and may have been hiking some trail since about 9:30 a.m.,” Dubois said. FOX 10 Phoenix.

Fire officials said they found the boy about a mile from the trail, evacuated him from the mountain by helicopter and then took him to a hospital.

Footage obtained by FOX 10 showed a helicopter airlifting the child off the trail.

Firefighters said reports suggest the boy may have been walking along the trail for several hours since mid-morning before firefighters were called.

Police have not released the child’s identity or the extent of his injuries.

The heat stroke comes as Arizona and much of the United States is experiencing extreme heat.

A “severe weather warning” has been issued for Phoenix due to high temperatures, according to National Weather Service officials.

The high temperature on Tuesday reached 113 degrees Fahrenheit, six degrees above normal.

Phoenix officials are urging both residents and visitors to be mindful of the difficulty of some trails on South Mountain.

“Some of the trails on South Mountain are pretty challenging. They’re quite long and if you’re an inexperienced hiker from out of town, you might not realize how difficult or challenging they are,” Dubois said.
