Jets’ Rushing Attack Faces Changes Due to Injury
This week, the Jets’ rushing strategy is set to shift significantly.
Running back Braelon Allen is currently looking for a second opinion regarding his injured left knee. Coach Ahlong Len has referred to it as “a rather serious knee injury.” Initial assessments pointed to a sprained MCL, but Glenn indicated that they’d hold off on making any injury reserve decisions until they receive that second opinion.
“We’re going to see where he’s at before deciding on the IR status,” Glenn mentioned.
Allen, who ranks as the team’s third leading rusher with 18 carries totaling 76 yards and one touchdown, was predicted to play a major role against the Dolphins this Monday before getting hurt. He managed four rushes for 29 yards during his first drive with the Jets but then fumbled near the goal line, leading to a turnover. The injury happened during the second quarter in a match that ended with a close 27-21 loss.
In response, the Jets will have Isaiah Davis stepping in as a backup for the upcoming game against the Cowboys on Sunday. Davis typically plays as a third-down back. Kene Nwangwu is also an option, although he has missed three games due to a hamstring issue.
“Isaiah is a solid back,” noted quarterback Justin Fields. “We’ve got Kene available as well. Honestly, our running back group has been deep since I joined.”
De Jermaine Johnson’s ankle situation is being monitored on a daily basis; he hasn’t participated in the last two games. Although the Jets did not hold practice on Wednesday, they mentioned that, if Johnson were to practice, he likely wouldn’t.
Glenn also shared that Nwangwu’s progress is being evaluated daily. Cornerback Michael Carter II is still not expected to be ready by Sunday, according to Glenn.
Meanwhile, Jarvis Browneejr, acquired in a trade last week, was seen practicing and could take Carter’s place in the lineup on Sunday. Tight end Mason Taylor is listed on the injury report with an ankle issue and was noted as a limited practice participant.
