During an online “Overtime” segment of HBO’s “Real Time” that aired Friday, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) argued that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s lawsuit against former 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and New York Attorney General Letitia James’ (D) lawsuit against the former president are bad lawsuits that should never have been filed and would never have been filed if they involved someone other than Trump and if Trump had not been a presidential candidate.
After host Bill Maher mentioned the Bragg case, Cuomo said, “The New York attorney general’s case should never have been filed. If his name wasn’t Donald Trump, if he wasn’t running for president, I’m a former attorney general of New York, that case would never have been filed. That’s what makes people angry, and it should be, because if there’s anything left, it’s faith in our justice system.”
Cuomo also argued that recognition of the legal flaws and political nature of the Bragg and James cases is one reason the ruling hasn’t been as politically damaging as some thought it would be.
