Brave 4-month-old goose warns Texas family about barn fire during the night

Brave Goose Saves Family from Barn Fire

A courageous young goose alerted its owner to a fire in the barn, ultimately saving the structure and the animals inside.

This four-month-old goose, named Goosey, has been part of the Gerber family since Mother’s Day. Although typically independent, Goosey was a little more animated last Tuesday.

When Burt Gerber nodded off on his couch late at night, Goosey began honking loudly—an impressive sound that caught Burt’s attention.

To Burt’s astonishment, Goosey was signaling the alarm as flames engulfed the barn on their Fort Bend County property.

Video footage shows the dedicated goose honking right in front of the flames.

“I just walked outside casually and saw the fire coming out,” Burt remembered. “I grabbed a hose and hurried over.”

Burt managed to put out the fire, and fortunately, all animals inside were safe.

“If I hadn’t been woken up, I think it could have escalated in just a few minutes,” he said.

Interestingly, Burt’s wife, Chelsea, was initially hesitant about having a goose, but their daughter, Elaine, instantly connected with Goosey at a Goose Hug event four months prior.

“When I first saw him, he was so tiny and fluffy,” Elaine recalled. “I patted his head, and he rested his head on my arm, and I just burst into tears.”

The family is now contemplating getting another goose, named Lucy, as a companion for Goosey.

Elaine also dreams big, saying, “And we’re going to have a child. I can start my own business.”
