Brave cousins, just 9 and 11, take action when they see trouble at their beloved ice cream shop

A New Ice Cream Haven in South St. Louis

Aaron Roesch recently opened an ice cream shop in south St. Louis, which has quickly become a beloved spot for local kids. They gather there often, enjoying the atmosphere as they do their homework and engage in creative activities.

Roche, speaking to KTVI-TV, mentioned that the shop, named Aunt Jamie’s Frozen Custard & Waffles after their aunt and godmother, is a place where young people feel comfortable to just hang out. He stresses the importance of kindness, urging everyone to treat peers and elders with respect.

Of course, delicious treats are always part of the equation. Adonis Pickens, 9, shared that “it’s like, he gives us everything,” referring to the generosity of Roche, who even offers things for free. His cousin, Jason Cooper, 11, noted that they visit Aunt Jamie’s almost daily.

Interestingly, Roche indicated that these boys were eager to help him and planned to work for ice cream and shaved ice. “These people have become my friends,” he said, reflecting on the bond they’ve formed. Jason affirmed, “We’re like his little friends.”

However, last week, their friendship took on new significance. As they approached the shop located at South Broadway and Claus Street, they noticed something unsettling.

Adonis recounted, “I came out here to buy ice cream and his window just broke.” Hearing strange noises, he called out to see if anyone was inside.

A KSDK report detailed that a man inside the shop had complained about bleeding, which later turned out to be red syrup on his clothes. The boys realized that the suspected robber was still inside. After trying to reach Roche and ultimately failing, Adonis called the police.

To buy time, the cousins kept talking to the man until the authorities arrived. The 42-year-old suspect explained he broke into the ice cream shop because he believed people were following him and was subsequently taken into custody.

According to the police, Ephraim Hayes was charged with second-degree robbery and first-degree criminal damage to property, though he was released on personal recognizance.

Reflecting on the situation, Roche stated, “If I didn’t have the friendship with these kids, that guy would have left without consequences.” Jason expressed confusion over why anyone would target Roche, emphasizing that he is a genuinely good person who deserves better treatment.

“We want this to be a lasting experience that will lead their future in a positive direction,” Roche added about the boys.

In more uplifting news, Roche announced that St. Louis Mayor Carla Spencer plans to visit Aunt Jamie’s on November 8 for an award presentation and an ice cream party.

He also noted that the community is revitalizing, with real estate values rising and local businesses bouncing back. Nonetheless, he highlighted that the heroic actions of Jason and Adonis represent a valuable lesson for everyone.
