Heroic School Principal Injured While Subduing Shooter
An Oklahoma school principal, Kirk Moore, was shot in the leg during an altercation with a school shooter, but managed to save a student in the process, authorities report.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) stated that the shooting incident occurred at Pauls Valley High School when Moore and another staff member confronted the assailant, identified as 20-year-old Victor Hawkins, a former student.
According to a spokesman for the department, Hunter McKee, “The principal of the school noticed an adult male had entered the premises armed.” He further explained that once Moore realized what was happening, other staff members quickly joined in to assist. Though the assailant fired several shots, only Moore was hurt.
An official emphasized that the decisive actions of Moore and the staff likely saved lives that day.
The staff managed to hold Hawkins until police arrived at approximately 2:30 p.m. to take him into custody. The students were placed on lockdown during the ordeal, and fortunately, no one else was injured.
Moore sustained a leg wound and was transported to the University of Oklahoma Health Hospital, located about 90 miles north of Pauls Valley for medical care.
Hawkins was arrested at the site and is currently held in Garvin County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including firing with intent to kill and unlawful possession of a firearm.
While the motive behind his actions is still being looked into, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt praised Principal Moore’s courage in protecting the students, stating that he and his wife hope for Moore’s speedy recovery. He expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and school officials for their prompt response.
Classes were canceled Wednesday as investigations continued at the school.
Mayor Jocelyn Rushing, who works alongside Moore as an administrative assistant, described him as a dedicated person who truly cares for his students. She noted that his commitment to their safety was clearly demonstrated through his brave actions.
