Tragic Death of Young Woman in Rope Jumping Incident
Three men could be facing criminal charges after a 21-year-old woman tragically died during a rope jumping event. Authorities say her instructor allegedly threw her off a bridge without securing her with a safety rope.
This heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday when Maria Eduarda Rodríguez de Freitas died at an abandoned bridge located around 90 miles northwest of Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to police investigator Andrea Levy, the instructors involved admitted that they did not attach any safety devices to Rodríguez de Freitas before the jump.
Levy stated, “I don’t recall if I forgot to attach the ropes or who was supposed to do it, but the reality is that the rope wasn’t connected to her.”
The police subsequently arrested the three instructors, who are suspected of murder with “ultimate intent,” a term under Brazilian law that is used when an individual is seen to have accepted the risk of causing death. They also face assault charges at the scene, as reported by Brazilian news agency G1.
According to investigators, Rodríguez de Freitas had asked to jump off the bridge in an “airplane style.” Two instructors lifted her above their shoulders as she stretched her arms out. Witnesses shared a video that captured the unfortunate moment shortly before the incident, showing the instructors throwing her off the bridge while one appeared to be wearing a safety harness.
Rodríguez de Freitas fell about 130 feet. Reports indicate she had purchased a guided tour that included the rope jumping activity.
Rope jumping is often confused with bungee jumping, but they differ in that rope jumping involves a low-stretch climbing rope, intended to create a pendulum-like swing instead of a bounce.
The city of Limeira released a statement offering their condolences to Rodríguez de Freitas’s family, expressing solidarity during this painful time.
Meanwhile, authorities are still investigating the situation, specifically whether the group conducting the jump had the necessary permission to operate at that location. They suspect that the lack of proper safety measures contributed to the tragic outcome.
Lawyers for the instructors claim their clients have experience in this activity and assert this was the first fatality in their history.
As the investigation continues, questions remain regarding accountability and the safety measures that were overlooked. The community mourns the loss of a young life under such tragic circumstances.
