Brazil's President Cautions Trump: 'Stay Out' of the Election

Brazilian President Calls Out Trump Over Election Interference

On Wednesday, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil and member of the Socialist Party, urged U.S. President Donald Trump not to “interfere in Brazil’s elections.” This statement came after Trump commented on the recent conviction of Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula expressed that he considered Trump’s behavior reminiscent of an emperor and described the president’s attitude toward Brazil as “disrespectful,” according to local news reports.

Both leaders attended the G7 summit in Evian, France, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. When asked about their discussions during the summit, Trump acknowledged they had talked about U.S. tariffs on Brazil and recent designations of Brazilian gangs as terrorists.

“I spent a lot of time with him, and politically it’s gotten a bit rough,” Trump noted. He mentioned learning about Eduardo Bolsonaro’s arrest after their meeting, suggesting it was politically motivated since he was performing well in the polls.

Trump claimed, “They arrested him or want to arrest him for remarks he made in Texas. There’s a significant fight happening, and no one fights like the U.S.” He continued, alleging that elections in America are “completely rigged” and hinted at election fraud.

Eduardo Bolsonaro was sentenced to four years and two months in prison for coercion. He reportedly sought U.S. intervention to influence the case against his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently barred from political participation until 2060 due to his imprisonment.

While Eduardo faces legal challenges, his brother, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, is campaigning for the presidency in the upcoming election in October 2026. Meanwhile, Lula seeks his fourth term.

During a press conference at the Brazilian embassy in Geneva, Lula responded to Trump’s remarks, expressing discomfort with the idea of foreign interference in Brazilian politics. He stated that while Trump is entitled to his preferences, he hopes Trump respects Brazil’s sovereignty during the election period.

“As far as I’m concerned, he can like Bolsonaro or anyone else. But please, don’t interfere in Brazil’s elections,” Lula emphasized. He reaffirmed that Brazil’s elections are its own concern, just as U.S. elections should be.

Lula described the respect that each country deserves from the other, highlighting the importance of respecting sovereignty.

Despite being a non-member of the G7, Lula was invited to the summit. There are indications that he and Trump may meet again at the White House in May after this week’s discussions.

The summit in France followed the U.S. decision to classify certain Brazilian gangs, such as the Red Command and Primeiro Commando da Capital, as terrorist organizations. Lula voiced his opposition to this designation, arguing that such groups are motivated by economic gain rather than any ideological battle against the state.

In a recent event, Lula criticized the designations made shortly after a meeting between Trump and the Bolsonaro brothers, who had requested the U.S. to consider such actions against the gangs.

On a broader scale, trade tensions between Brazil and the U.S. have been rising, particularly after the appointment of U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Reports suggest that Trump is mulling over imposing additional tariffs on Brazilian goods due to alleged unfair trade practices that affect U.S. business interests.
