BREAKING: Joe Biden announces he is ending his presidential campaign, will finish term

President Joe Biden announced in a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter) that he has decided not to complete his campaign for reelection in 2024.

Biden, who is under increasing pressure from Democratic leaders after failing to convince them in a series of television appearances after the debate that he is capable of defeating former President Donald Trump in the general election, said in a statement: “Serving your president has been the greatest honor of my life. While I intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to step aside for the remainder of my term and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my presidency.”

Biden’s statement thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for her service but stopped short of endorsing her.

In a statement released to reporters later, Biden said he had his “full support” for Harris and called on Democrats to unite behind her candidacy.

In a follow-up post on X, Biden continued, “My first decision as the 2020 nominee was to select Kamala Harris as my vice president, and it was the best decision I ever made. Today, I fully endorse and support Kamala as our party’s nominee this year.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as the situation develops.
