The Giants-Jets rivalry doesn’t matter when belligerent fans are involved.
Jets star Breece Hall was rescued by Giants legend Carl Banks during an incident at the airport during Sunday’s Super Bowl. According to TMZ.
After a week in Las Vegas leading up to the Super Bowl, the Jets’ star running back landed at Newark Liberty International Airport and was met by a fan seeking an autograph at baggage claim.
For some reason, Hall preferred not to sign, and things took an ugly turn.
A nearby witness witnessed the altercation and began recording it on his phone, but it’s unclear exactly what was said or done that started the commotion.
“So be a man. If you’re going to hit it, hit it!” a fan can be heard shouting toward the 22nd hole.
Banks, 61, then intervened, and the former linebacker placed his 6-foot-4 frame between Hall and the fans to defuse the situation.
The fans continued to punch Hall, but Hall seemed to remain calm despite the altercation.
The incident sparked reactions from nearby travelers, and an off-camera witness could be heard shouting, “If you get into a fight at the airport, it’s a federal crime.”
As the man finally walked away from Hall and Banks, he uttered one final insult.
“Get that son of a bitch out of here, damn it!”
Asked why she stepped in to help Hall, Banks told TMZ she didn’t want to stand by and watch her star get ruined.
Both players played in Sunday afternoon’s Stadium Series game between the Rangers and Islanders at MetLife Stadium.
Last season, Hall scored five touchdowns and was six yards away from reaching 1,000 touchdowns just 15 months after tearing his ACL.
In the final game of the season against the Patriots on January 7, he ran 37 times for 178 yards and scored the game-winning 50-yard touchdown. Hall also caught two passes for 12 yards.
