Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio hit home runs in Mets' defeat as choices approach

Mark Vientos’ Return is Near

As Mark Vientos approaches his comeback, the competition for regular spots in the lineup intensifies, particularly for Brett Baty. With this return, Ronny Mauricio is likely headed back to the minors.

Both players showed promise during an otherwise dull 8-4 defeat to the Rays at Citi Field on Saturday.

Baty hit a solo home run to right field in the third inning, clocking an impressive exit velocity of 115.6 mph—his personal best and the hardest ball hit by the Mets this season. Yet, just days before this moment, he struggled with a .132/.209/.211 slash line over his last twelve outings.

“I think I’ve been hitting the ball hard pretty consistently over the last few weeks,” Baty reflected. “It’s just right at people. I feel good right now, though; it’s all about consistency for me.”

As for Vientos, he’s set to begin his rehab assignments at Triple-A Syracuse soon. He initially secured the starting third base role last season but has faced challenges this year, landing on the injured list due to hamstring tightness. Meanwhile, Baty has solidified his playing time in Vientos’ absence.

“Honestly, I’m not thinking about the competition at third base,” Baty stated. “I’m just focused on helping this team win.”

His versatility is beneficial; he can cover both third and second base.

“It’s a bit fun, to be honest,” Baty admitted. “I’m bouncing around, practicing different positions. Sometimes I even take ground balls at shortstop or first base.”

After Vientos’ injury, the Mets called up Mauricio, giving Baty more opportunities at second base. Mauricio filled in at third in seven of his nine games.

On Saturday, he also belted a solo home run, but his 1-for-4 performance brought his season total to just 6-for-32, making him a likely candidate for demotion when Vientos returns.

“Unless he finds a way to really impress soon, it’s going to be tough for him,” a thought many Mets fans might share.

Coach Carlos Mendoza described Mauricio’s performance as inconsistent, noting some standout games in Colorado but emphasizing the need for patience given his missed time due to injury. However, it seems Vientos will return sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, Baty and Mauricio have a crucial chance to showcase their skills and potentially secure their spots in Mendoza’s lineup decisions.
