Brian Branch suspended for causing postgame Lions-Chiefs fight

Brian Branch Suspended Following Chiefs-Lions Altercation

In the aftermath of the Chiefs’ dominant victory over the Lions, Brian Branch has received a one-game suspension due to an incident involving JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Right after the game concluded, a Lions defensive back took a swing at Smith-Schuster, which led to a brief altercation before things calmed down.

“Your offensive, non-football conduct was entirely unwarranted, posed a serious risk of injury, and clearly violates the standards expected of NFL players. Your actions reflect poorly on the NFL and have no place in our game,” stated John Runyan, NFL vice president of football operations, in a statement regarding Branch’s suspension.

During the suspension, which is unpaid, Branch will have the option to appeal. He expressed after the game that his punch was a reaction fueled by frustration over what he perceived as a foul block from Smith-Schuster late in the match.

He acknowledged that his behavior was “childish” and recognized that he “shouldn’t have done that.” Lions head coach Dan Campbell criticized Branch’s actions during his postgame press conference. Campbell expressed admiration for Branch but emphasized, “What he did was unacceptable and won’t be tolerated here.” He added that such conduct is not representative of what they stand for as a team.

The skirmish ignited when Branch approached Smith-Schuster, and following a move from the Chiefs receiver, a Lions player struck Branch’s helmet. This quickly escalated into a chaotic scene.

Running back Isaiah Pacheco attempted to intervene, yet Smith-Schuster’s reaction led to a more intense scuffle.
