Brian Cashman Takes Part in Sleep Out for Covenant House
Yankees fans have plenty of opinions about Brian Cashman, but ignoring important causes isn’t one of them.
Cashman, the Yankees’ general manager, participated in his 14th Covenant House Sleep Out at the Javits Center, fully aware of the implications.
“You know, there’s this meme… like, ‘Brian Cashman is falling asleep on the job,’” he said while wrapped in his sleeping bag. “It’s all over social media.”
At the event, he was the top fundraiser, bringing in $26,000 to support efforts against youth homelessness. To put it into perspective, over 378 participants collectively raised more than $2 million, according to the sleepout website.
“I wouldn’t wish this on anyone,” Cashman mentioned. He reflected on the reality of homelessness, comparing his temporary discomfort to the daily struggles of kids who lack a safe place to sleep. “This one night for me… I can go home, take a shower, and get my coffee. But these kids? They wonder where they’ll sleep, trying to stay safe, thinking about when their next meal might come. It’s unimaginable.”
As for his job, the non-tender deadline looms, scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. With ongoing salary concerns, the pressure is palpable. Cashman noted that he plans to have early discussions regarding non-bidding candidates.
Cody Bellinger remains a key focus for fans, and the outfield adjustments are crucial for the offseason.
“We do have a set pay scale,” Cashman remarked. “It’s still under discussion. Sometimes, we push hard to finalize deals, but markets can be unpredictable. It’s essential to communicate with other GMs and agents.”
In this line of work, it seems there’s little time for rest.
