Tragic Death of New Jersey Hiker at Mount Marcy
A 21-year-old woman from New Jersey succumbed to hypothermia after slipping off a trail while hiking in New York’s highest peak, according to authorities.
Brianna Mohr was discovered near the summit of Mount Marcy on February 12, where she was pronounced dead by New York State Forest Rangers. Reports indicate that state rangers received an alert about a distressed hiker and his dog around 3 p.m. That initiated a significant search operation.
Mohr’s lifeless body was located around 9 p.m. An autopsy later confirmed that hypothermia was the cause of death.
Interestingly, her dog was unharmed and successfully rescued.
On the day of the incident, temperatures in Keene, New York, fluctuated between -8 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius. Mount Marcy, standing tall at 5,344 feet in the Adirondack Mountains, is known for its challenging conditions.
Mohr had called 911 at 3:05 p.m., reporting that she had slipped and was unable to regain the trail, as mentioned by a spokesperson from the New York State Department of Environmental Protection.
The search teams utilized snowmobiles and tracked utility vehicles, while aerial units conducted flyovers in anticipation of a hoist rescue. However, after 6 p.m., a ranger continued searching on foot, following a drop-off at the Mercy Dam outpost.
In an emotional post on February 16, Mohr’s brother, Ryan, expressed his feelings on Instagram, recalling how she was the best sister and friend he could have wished for.
Meanwhile, Mohr’s mother was visibly distressed, sharing a photo of her daughter on Valentine’s Day alongside the caption, “I’m so lost.”
Her Instagram showcases numerous images from her adventures in picturesque locations, including national parks, highlighting her love for the outdoors.
