A keen photographer spotted a glowing fireball soaring through the sky in southeastern New Hampshire on Saturday evening.
Rob Wright, a professional photographer from New Hampshire, shared dashcam footage featuring what seemed to be a meteor, which he described as a “bright green baldy,” illuminating the sky while he drove through Portsmouth.
“Honestly, that was one of the most incredible sights I’ve ever witnessed; probably the best thing I’ve ever recorded,” Wright remarked.
A yellow flash lit up the sky as Wright approached a roundabout in the coastal town. The video shows the fireball streaking downward, emitting a brilliant trail before vanishing completely in just eight seconds.
Residents from Nashua and Londonderry, southwest of Portsmouth and near the Massachusetts border, reported similar sightings of what they thought was a meteorite.
Reports also indicated that numerous people from towns like Dover, Bedford, Rindge, Hooksett, and Jaffrey, all within a 90-mile range of Portsmouth, observed the event.
A woman living in Portsmouth mentioned, “Initially, I thought it was fireworks,” reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the sighting.
What exactly this fireball was remains unclear.
When meteorites fall from orbit, they can resemble fireballs but often leave a more noticeable impact.
In August, a 3-foot meteorite disintegrated while flying over Georgia, scattering pieces across Newton County and creating a sonic boom comparable to 20 tons of TNT exploding.
Fragments were discovered throughout the area, with one even crashing through a house’s roof.
In a separate incident in summer 2024, a meteorite fell about 30 miles above midtown Manhattan, producing enough force to rattle parts of New York City.
