Britain Might Acknowledge Palestine as a State This Year, According to Lammy.

The UK is in discussions with France and Saudi Arabia about recognizing Palestine as a state later this year, according to the foreign minister of the current government.

British Foreign Minister David Lammy mentioned in a House committee this week that the government is engaged in talks with France and Saudi Arabia regarding the recognition of Palestine. This initiative aims to maintain the viability of the two-state solution, with discussions expected to take place in New York in June, he stated.

“When the UK acknowledges Palestine as a state, no one has a veto,” Lammy remarked. He stressed that this move is not merely symbolic but is intended to leverage British perspectives to advocate for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

“It’s unacceptable for a group to be without a state for my entire life and beyond,” he noted.

“The only viable option is a two-state solution, and we will keep collaborating with our partners, particularly with France, as we prepare for the meeting in New York alongside Saudi Arabia… We are committed to pursuing the two-state approach.”

Lammy expressed disappointment that the recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by various European nations, such as Spain, Norway, and Ireland, hasn’t significantly changed the situation.

“Countries in Europe have made this recognition recently. Has it changed much in reality? Sadly, the answer hasn’t been encouraging. [This] threatens the very concept of two states,” he stated.

Furthermore, left-leaning lawmakers have indicated that part of establishing a two-state solution includes a demilitarization process and the exclusion of Hamas from the government.

Israel has been a crucial ally and significant market for the UK’s defense exports, but this relationship shifted following last year’s elections that brought the left-wing Labour government to power. Political dynamics within the party, influenced by the views of various groups, have added complexity to this relationship.

Pro-Gaza Independents have made notable gains, and companies supplying arms to Israel have faced physical protests in the UK, leading the government to suspend arms export licenses.
