British man convicted in $6 million gold toilet heist

The British man was convicted Tuesday of stealing an 18-carat golden toilet that was on display as artwork at the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

A fully functional toilet, a work by Italian artist Maurizio Catheran entitled “America,” was stolen from the Churchills' seat at Blenheim Palace in southern England, a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 98 kg toilet was insured for $6 million. Prosecutors say it was split into small amounts of gold to sell it.

Michael Jones, 39, pleaded not guilty after being found guilty to robbery at Oxford Crown Court.
