The right guard flinched. It looked like a clear penalty to me.
Brittany Mahomes disagreed, saying the call was incredibly weak and joking that officials only made it because it was against her family’s team. But the player did move early, and Kansas City also lost out on what could have been a game-winning touchdown. Maybe it’s time for Brittany to endure a little adversity. The numbers don’t really support the idea that the NFL is targeting her husband, either.
Through the first eight games, the Chiefs had a net advantage of 10 penalties, with opponents flagged more often. Kansas City is often among the league’s least-penalized home teams at Arrowhead, while road games can bring more pre-snap penalties as players adjust to crowd noise and timing.
It’s time to admit Costco’s prepared meals can be a pretty good deal. The taco kit costs $16. We worked out that 12 tacos from our local Mexican restaurant would come to about $65 before tip. The $5 chickens are a bargain, and the hot dog combo is a classic, but I think the taco platter deserves a little more attention.
Mariah Carey, 57, deserves some credit for embracing the running joke that Christmas starts as soon as Halloween ends. You can roll your eyes at the song, but she knows how to read the room and make money. People seem to put up their decorations earlier every year, and Billboard estimates that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” brings in between $2.7 million and $3.3 million in royalties. Not a bad retirement plan.
The Vikings might be the least convincing 6-1 team I’ve seen in two decades. The Lions’ defense has been battered, their secondary has struggled all season, and now Jack Campbell is out with neck and concussion concerns. Yet Minnesota managed just 81 rushing yards against Detroit. Kyler Murray accounted for 35 of them. That’s pretty awful, though my Lions remain close in the NFC North race. The Bears visit Detroit on November 26 for what could be one of the biggest Thanksgiving games in Lions history. The cheapest tickets are going for $310.
One reader says he refuses to have groceries delivered. He likes going to his local Publix, where he knows some of the staff and enjoys browsing for sales. He’s retired, he says, and has time to wander around the store when other shoppers are in a hurry. He even jokes that people may have been stuck behind him on the road while he puttered along in his golf cart.
He also had a few thoughts about Bill and Jordan’s relationship, saying he wasn’t surprised and joking that a midlife crisis usually involves a sports car and a new hair color. In this case, Bill apparently skipped those steps and went straight to dating someone much younger.
On Notre Dame, the same reader says this is his favorite time of year: the team is back in the top five, and fans are starting to talk about a national championship. He’s not ready to write his full rant about it yet, but says it’s coming.
Another reader offered a different perspective on grocery delivery. During the pandemic, ordering groceries online was a lifeline for her elderly mother, who lived in another state. A delivery worker would even bring the groceries inside and put them away. The family now does the same for her mother-in-law, and she points out that plenty of people rely on this service to help relatives who live far away.
Mrs. Screencaps got me up an hour early this morning after a disagreement about the clocks. The alarm went off, I jumped out of bed and went to wake up Screencaps Jr., who insisted his clock was correct. Mrs. Screencaps was just as sure she was right. I finally checked my phone downstairs and discovered I’d lost an hour of sleep because of her clock-setting mishap.
Something else came across my social media feed as I was finishing this column. I can picture him and Brittany at home, both convinced the officials are out to get them.
November is here. There are leaves to rake, decorations to put up, work to do and sports to watch. The countdown to Thanksgiving week is officially on. Let’s get through three full weeks of work, then ease into the holiday meal.
Have a great day.
