Broadway Shows Suffering as Suburban Tourists Avoid New York City Due to High Crime

Broadway shows are reportedly taking a financial hit as out-of-town tourists increasingly avoid New York City due to high crime rates.

Audiences near the New York metropolitan area accounted for just 14% of all Broadway ticket sales for the 2022-2023 season, the lowest number in the 23 years the Broadway League has tracked such data. new york post report.

Half of suburbanites who haven't returned to Broadway cite “safety concerns” as the main reason for not seeing a show, according to a survey by marketing and advertising firm Situation Group.

Just over 40 percent of suburban residents reportedly agreed with the statement that they “travel to Manhattan for fun less often than they did in 2019.”

In Democratic-run New York, assaults will increase by 6 percent and auto thefts will increase by 15 percent in 2023. Although overall crime has declined for the year, the city still suffers from widespread illegal activity, thanks in large part to left-wing crime mitigation policies. Meanwhile, many New York City police officers are reportedly headed for the exits, with pre-retirement resignations spiking across the department.

Broadway shows sold a total of 12.3 million tickets for the 2022-2023 season, a 17% decrease from the 2018-2019 season, the last full season before the coronavirus pandemic.
