She recounted initiating a conversation with them, asking if they were part of a troupe. They confirmed, and when she mentioned her involvement in theater, one young man in a beret nonchalantly replied, “That’s cool,” and humorously added, “Rest in peace.”
Benanti noted in a follow-up video that the experience left her feeling a bit taken aback, especially as a seasoned performer known for shows like “Gypsy,” “She Loves Me,” and “My Fair Lady.”
However, her story drew criticism from some fans who questioned why she expected recognition from the younger crowd. Comments ranged from amusing to critical, with one user quipping about her unnoticed status and another admitting they also had no idea who she was.
Benanti later addressed the backlash in another video, clarifying that her initial post was meant to be self-deprecating rather than a critique of the teenagers. She humorously pointed out the irony of her comedy show titled “Nobody Cares,” emphasizing that she understands her place in the larger scope of celebrities.
