Brock Nelson nets two goals as Team USA defeats Latvia to start the Olympics

Team USA Dominates Latvia in Men’s Ice Hockey Opener

In a strong showing, Team USA began its journey in the men’s ice hockey division of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games with a decisive 5-1 victory over Latvia on Thursday night.

The team features a wealth of young talent, yet it was 34-year-old Brock Nelson, from the Colorado Avalanche, who emerged as the standout performer, netting two goals in the second period.

Nelson opened the scoring early in the game, but Latvia quickly equalized. However, Jack Hughes, a rising star from the New Jersey Devils, pushed Team USA ahead again with a goal in front of the net, making it 2-1.

As the game progressed, Hughes stole the puck from Matthew Tkachuk, which set the stage for Nelson’s second goal of the night, stretching the lead further just before the end of the second period.

Earlier, there was some controversy when Nelson had a goal disallowed due to goalie interference. Additionally, Quinn Hughes had a goal called back as well after a successful offside claim from the Latvian bench, keeping the game tied at 1-1 for a while.

Brady Tkachuk, the younger brother of Matthew, kicked off the scoring for Team USA with a clever wrist shot that found its way past the Latvian goalie, Elvis Merzlikins.

Shortly after the disallowed goals, Latvia found the net through Leonard Krastenberg, who capitalized on a scramble in front of Team USA’s net. That was unfortunately the only goal Latvia could muster, as their offense struggled against the Americans.

Team USA had a significant advantage in terms of hits, with 38 compared to Latvia’s 18, which undoubtedly contributed to their commanding performance.

Tage Thompson and Auston Matthews each scored for Team USA during crucial moments, with Thompson’s goal making it 3-1 in the second period, followed by Matthews sealing the deal in the third with a close-range effort.

Looking ahead, Team USA seems well-positioned for their upcoming match against host country Italy. They’ve set a high standard for themselves and displayed their capabilities beautifully against Latvia.
