A 17-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder after allegedly fatally shooting a Bronx teen over a dispute between his girlfriends on social media, police said.
Tyrell Williams was arrested at his Wakefield home around 12:15 p.m., five days after he was accused of pulling the trigger and hitting 17-year-old Lakai Dash three times, according to the NYPD.
Williams was also charged with manslaughter and possession of a weapon.
The teenager is accused of firing at Dash a block away from Legacy College High School, the South Bronx school where Dash attended.
Disturbing footage obtained by the newspaper shows Williams targeting the fleeing high school senior across Caldwell Street in Melrose before firing three bullets, hitting Dash in the neck and back. A video is shown that purports to be.
Dash’s family claimed the violence was a senseless escalation of a social media dispute between Williams and Dash’s girlfriend.
Williams’ girlfriend showed up at the high school to get into a fight with Dash’s girlfriend, but as fate would have it, she took Williams in as protection, Dash’s grandmother, Vivian Coward, told the Post last week.
Neither Williams nor his girlfriend attended Legacy College High School, she said.
“Lakuai’s girlfriend was hitting another little girl. That girl’s boyfriend went and put Laquai’s girlfriend in a choke hold. Then Laquai strangled him to get him away from his girlfriend. So he turned and shot Rakwai in the neck,” said Coward, 62.
“Lakuay died for no reason. It was meaningless. Absolutely meaningless.”
Dash was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said this is Williams’ second arrest, having previously been arrested on weapons charges in 2022.
Dash’s grandmother described him as a “decent kid” and “good grandson” who enjoyed spending time with his friends and encouraged him to leave the house early in the morning to wake up his friends and go to school with him. Ta.
The teens were very loyal siblings who wanted a stable career in the hospitality industry and were looking forward to traveling to Spain on a senior class trip at the end of March.
