Brown University Cancels Basketball Games Amid Ongoing Investigation

Brown University has called off its upcoming basketball games as authorities continue to search for a suspect connected to a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others.

The athletic department announced on Tuesday that both the men’s and women’s basketball games set for Sunday are canceled. The women’s team was supposed to face Monmouth, while the men’s team had plans to play in Southern California.

In a statement, the Trojans expressed solidarity with Brown University, saying it was a “mutual agreement.” They extended their support to the university, acknowledging the impact of this tragedy on its community, including students and staff.

Earlier incidents unfolded around 4:30 p.m. ET when an unidentified gunman entered the Barth and Hawley College of Engineering building and opened fire, claiming the lives of Ella Cook and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov. Cook, who was just 19, served as the president of Brown University Republicans.

Local officials mentioned that although a person of interest was briefly detained, they were later released due to a lack of evidence. Surveillance footage has surfaced showing a figure, dressed in black with a face covering, in what seems to be a residential area.

Investigators are currently describing this individual as a male, around 5 feet 8 inches tall and with a stocky build. The efforts to locate the suspect remain ongoing, and the situation continues to unfold, leaving many in the community in shock.
