Brown University recently finalized the transfer of 255 acres of land to a Native American tribe.
The land in Bristol, Rhode Island, is currently in a preservation trust established by a foundation. Pokanoket Indian Tribe, Associated Press (AP) reported Monday noted that tribes and indigenous groups in the area now have access to the area.
This land is the ancestral home of Metacom (also known as King Philip), leader of the Pokanoket tribe. This is also where he died in 1676. King Philip's Wara bloody conflict between tribes and European settlers.
In August 2017, tribal members and their supporters set up an encampment on campus, claiming the land was illegally taken hundreds of years ago.
The school then established that the land was Pokanoket.
According to the tribe Website“Prior to European colonization, the Pokanoket were leaders of the tribal groups that make up the modern Wampanoag.”
