Bruce Pearl Considered for Senate Seat in Alabama
As lawmakers express their desire to run for governor of Alabama, Bruce Pearl has emerged as a potential candidate to fill the spot left by U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville.
The head coach of the Auburn Tigers men’s basketball team has received backing from Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, despite Pearl’s known support for former President Donald Trump.
Pearl recently pondered, during an interview on the “Scott Jennings Show,” whether he could make a significant impact as a senator compared to his role as a basketball coach. He reflected, “I’m a coach teaching kids… I’m not sure I need to go into politics to make a difference.”
Auburn’s Athletic Director, John Cohen, indicated he hopes Pearl will continue coaching for the 2025-26 season but acknowledged that circumstances could shift. “Things can change, as we know,” he commented.
Pearl, who is Jewish, has strongly voiced his support for Israel, particularly in light of escalating anti-Semitism in the U.S. following the October 7 terrorist attacks. He also endorsed Trump’s approach to Middle Eastern conflicts.
In addition, he has been considered for the position of president of the American Israeli Education Association.
With a record of 246 wins and 125 losses as head coach, Pearl has notably led Auburn to two Final Four appearances, including one in the most recent season.
