Bruce Pearl of Auburn Grieves for Slain Israeli Embassy Workers

Auburn Tigers Men’s Basketball Coach Reflects on Tragic Incident

Auburn’s basketball coach, Bruce Pearl, expressed sorrow over the tragic murder of two staff members from the Israeli embassy, who were killed following an event at the Capital Jewish Museum on Wednesday night.

Pearl highlighted the alarming increase in anti-Semitism in the U.S. and how certain propaganda has contributed to the deaths of the two embassy employees. “There’s a significant rise in anti-Semitism, and we’re working hard to confront it,” he remarked. He shared that the victims were a young diplomatic couple, noting that the young man had a ring and was intending to propose to his partner, envisioning a life together.

He criticized the notion of “free Palestine,” suggesting it’s often a guise for anti-Semitic sentiments, stating that proponents of this message do not support Palestinians. According to him, “When they chant ‘free Palestine,’ they are implying a desire for a Jewish-free Palestine. It’s all interconnected.” He warned that calls for violence against Jews could easily shift to target other groups.

Pearl expressed doubts about whether Wednesday’s tragic events would sway those who oppose Israel. “Honestly, I’m not sure what can be done. We seem to be at a critical juncture right now. In just three days, life will move on to the next issue,” he said. He pointed out the divide among Jewish lawmakers and senators, particularly within the Democratic party, regarding these complex issues.
