Bruce Springsteen ‘was not comfortable’ in Los Angeles or New York, feels ‘safe’ in New Jersey

Bruce Springsteen sticks to his New Jersey roots, avoiding Los Angeles and New York to stay near his hometown of Freehold.

“This is certainly not Los Angeles,” Springsteen said. Sunday Times In a new interview. “I feel safe here. This is where my people are, this is where the people I wrote about are. I was never a worldly young man.”

The “Born to Run” singer said she “didn't feel comfortable while living in Los Angeles” in the '80s and '90s and “didn't feel comfortable in New York either.”

“I don't think you'll find a photo of me falling out of a nightclub in either venue. And when Patti and I had kids, I wasn't happy about them growing up in Los Angeles. I was 6. I grew up in a block of people. We moved back here because it was where our relatives lived. The kids had uncles and aunts nearby and it was nice to not be in this industry type of place. The price was a normal life.”

The 75-year-old said his children didn't know who their father was, but he and Patti intentionally kept their family out of the spotlight.

“When they were little, they'd hear me on the radio and they'd say, 'Bruce Springsteen!'” It was this abstract idea that seemed to be part of their lives. “It was their way of separating the father from the character,” he said.
