Bruins, Celtics’ home arena faces outrage over new bag policy

TD Garden, home of the NBA’s Boston Celtics and NHL’s Boston Bruins, faced backlash over the weekend as a new bag policy went into effect.

The policy began Saturday when the Bruins hosted the Los Angeles Kings. Fans are not allowed to bring bags larger than 6 inches by 4 inches by 1.5 inches into the arena. All backpacks will also be prohibited from being brought into the arena. Bags purchased at the Boston Pro Shop are permitted but are subject to inspection.

Arena reminded fans of the policy on Sunday.

“Starting February 17th, a new @EvolvTechnology security screening will be conducted at TD Garden,” Arena posted on its X account. “To ensure a faster admission process, we strongly discourage customers from bringing bags. No bags larger than 6″ x 4″ x 1.5″ will be allowed.”

The Boston Herald reported that 98.5 Sports Hub Bruins writer Ty Anderson posted about the massive confusion surrounding the new rules for Saturday’s game.

Anderson told There are a lot of people who are angry because they were told they could check their luggage for dollars.”

Female hockey fans and NHL media alike noted that bag restrictions have a greater impact on women.

“If you see me carrying TD Double Fisting tampons and EpiPens, this is why,” Sports Hub’s Kendra Middleton wrote on X.

“I’m sorry, but what’s going on with this is ridiculous. Isn’t it discrimination?” Bleacher Report’s Sarah Civian wrote.
