Bryan Kohberger’s lawyers request a postponement of the Idaho murder trial following the Dateline special.

Lawyers for Brian Coberger, who faces charges in the murders of four University of Idaho students, are requesting a delay for his trial. They argue that a recent NBC “Dateline” special may have created bias against Coberger, making it necessary for more time to prepare.

The defense claims that moving forward without this additional time could violate Coberger’s constitutional rights. They have expressed concern that ongoing investigations and the recent publicity surrounding the case could hinder a fair trial.

In a court filing, the defense stated, “A significant amount of ongoing testing and preparations are required due to unresolved matters, alongside recent biased media coverage.” They also mentioned that any convictions resulting from such a trial could face challenges due to being deemed unconstitutional.

An episode of NBC’s “Dateline,” aired on May 9, revealed new information, including surveillance footage showing a vehicle similar to Coberger’s near the victims’ location just before their deaths.

Moreover, the defense highlighted the potential for other leaks of sensitive information related to the case. They expressed concerns about future publications, suggesting that promotional materials might imply that improper disclosures have occurred beyond the recent reports.

Experts have weighed in, with one forensic professor noting that the airing of these episodes might taint the jury pool, complicating the process of selecting an unbiased jury.

As the legal proceedings unfold, with another court appearance scheduled, the implications of media attention and public opinion remain significant factors in Coberger’s case.
