Bucs’ Baker Mayfield downplays Tom Brady remarks, says words were taken ‘out of context’

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield raised eyebrows last week when he suggested Tom Brady's championship mindset was causing stress in the team's locker room.

After Brady's reaction during the Fox broadcast of the Buccaneers' victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, Mayfield downplayed his comments in an interview with reporters.

“I think a lot of it was taken out of context and it was never personal,” he said via ESPN. “That's exactly what he asked of his players and that's the aura of Tom Brady. And that's what he did to bring a championship here.”

“Nothing personal, but yeah, when we were talking before the game, he was obviously happy for me and he knows the players well, so I was very happy with Mike ( “I know how much fun it is to pitch to (Kevin Evans) and Chris (Godwin) (because) he has to do the same thing.” It's fun to be able to talk about the same experiences as those guys. ”

Mr. Mayfield made the first statement. “Casa de Club” Podcast.

“The building was a little different with Tom,” Mayfield said. “Obviously, playing-wise, Tom was different. He made everyone nervous, he was in a tense environment. So I think everyone was pretty stressed out.”

“So for me, and everyone expected the Bucs last year to not be good, they wanted me to come in and be myself and not have too much fun and just bring the joy back to football. As a player, you can't ask for anything more than that.''

Brady, who watched Mayfield throw two touchdown passes during Sunday's game, had a candid reaction.

“I thought it was stressful not having a Super Bowl ring,” Brady said during the game. “I came to work every day like a champion. This wasn't a daycare center. If I wanted to have fun, I would go to Disneyland with my kids.

“There's a way to approach this game, and trying to push each other outside of our comfort zone is the right mindset, and great teammates do that. I'm coming in, too, like (Rob) Gronkowski. (There are players like (Mike).'') Evans: There are high expectations placed on us, so we have to go out there and deliver. ”
