Bulls let go of Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley as they start a major change

Chicago Bulls Leadership Change

The Chicago Bulls are making significant changes in their leadership. On Monday, the team announced the dismissal of executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Mark Eversley. This decision comes as the Bulls prepare to miss the playoffs for the fifth time in six years.

Karnisovas and Eversley were brought on board in spring 2020 after the organization moved on from longtime executive Gar Forman, reappointing John Paxson in the process. Unfortunately, the team hasn’t improved much during their tenure, posting a record of 224 wins to 254 losses.

“Mr. Alturas and Mr. Mark have shown a strong commitment to the Chicago Bulls,” said Bulls CEO and President Michael Reinsdorf in a statement. “Making these decisions is never easy, especially involving respected individuals both personally and professionally.”

Reinsdorf continued, expressing gratitude for their hard work over the years, but acknowledged that success has been elusive. “It’s my responsibility to pursue a new direction. This change aims to set the team up for long-term success,” he added.

Currently, the Bulls sit in 12th place in the Eastern Conference with a 29-49 record, and they are poised to enter the draft lottery for the third consecutive year.

The challenges faced by Karnisovas and Eversley became more apparent last week when the team released Jaden Ivey, less than two months after acquiring him as part of a three-team trade. Ivey was let go for “conduct detrimental to the team” following a controversial online rant criticizing the NBA’s efforts for Pride Month.

In the video, Ivey spoke extensively about his religious beliefs and referred to Catholicism as a “false religion” during an Instagram livestream.

Additionally, Karnisovas and Eversley traded away a number of key players, including Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White at this year’s trade deadline, along with future All-Star Lauri Markkanen back in 2021. Patrick Williams also received a five-year, $90 million contract extension in 2024, despite currently averaging a career-low of 6.6 points per game.

Reports suggest that the Bulls plan to keep head coach Billy Donovan, despite the changes in the front office. His hiring was part of the era that Karnisovas and Eversley managed.

Donovan has guided the Bulls to the playoffs just once during the 2021-22 season.

Reinsdorf conveyed his understanding of fans’ frustrations, stating, “I want my fans to know that I hear you and share your feelings. I know change takes time, but I’m committed to getting it right.” He added, “The Chicago Bulls are focused on building a team that can compete at the highest level and hopefully contend for championships. We will take the necessary steps to advance the Bulls in a manner our fans can be proud of.”
