Hollywood Hills Home Invasion Leaves Heiress Injured
Margaux Mirkin, daughter of the retired founder of Budget Rental Cars, was reportedly attacked in her Hollywood Hills home on Thursday night. She was said to have been strangled, beaten, and robbed by two masked intruders who broke into her property.
The assault was particularly brutal, with the assailants allegedly “shattering” her jaw during the incident, which took place around 8 p.m. at her residence on Lookout Mountain Avenue, according to reports from a local news station.
Mirkin, believed to be between 68 and 70 years old, was taken to the hospital but was later released. Law enforcement officials stated that the attackers fled the scene in a white Honda Accord.
Neighbors described her home as somewhat isolated, sitting atop a dead-end street without streetlights, which they suggested made it a “perfect street for trespassing.”
Her father, Morris Mirkin, established Budget Rent-A-Car in Los Angeles back in 1958 before selling the company a decade later; it is now part of Avis Car Rental.
This expansive home is reported to be around 7,280 square feet, boasting five bathrooms and a three-car garage.
Residents indicated that the criminals stole cash and jewelry, including pieces gifted to Mirkin by her late husband, who perished in a house fire in Laurel Canyon in November 2024.
One neighbor expressed shock over the violent break-in, noting that such crimes are rare in their neighborhood. “It’s very unusual for the Hollywood Hills,” he remarked, adding that incidents there typically involve minor offenses like mailbox theft.
Mirkin is someone who kept a low profile and, according to neighbors, didn’t flaunt her wealth. One local described her as a “lovely local lady” who enjoys her retirement.
Reports indicated that she has owned the home since February 2003.
Mirkin previously played a significant role in her father’s business, managing his Beverly Hills division at just 24. In a 1982 profile, she referred to herself as a “fairy godmother” who helps clients escape into the glamorous lifestyle of Los Angeles.
Her most recent marriage was to William de Rothschild, who tragically died in a fire accident. The couple tied the knot in Nevada in 1999. There were claims about his connections to the famous Rothschild banking family; however, it was later revealed that he changed his name from Richard Kaufman and his links to that lineage were dubious.
“I’m 100 percent sure my brother was Kaufman, not Rothschild,” his sibling reportedly stated.
