Eleven people were killed and 13 injured when a bus crashed into a group of students and their parents at a school in eastern China early Tuesday, police said.
The students and parents were at the gate of the middle school in Tai'an city in the eastern province of Shandong just before 7.30am, Dongping county police said in a social media post.
Six parents and five students were killed.
Police said one of the injured was in critical condition, while the other was in stable condition.
The driver has been detained by police and the incident is currently under investigation.
The buses were specially adapted for transporting students, he said.
It has not been revealed who is responsible for operating the bus.
Many schools outsource such services to private companies or individuals.
School safety has long been a problem in China, with overloaded school buses and poorly designed school buildings.
In 2017, a school bus crashed and caught fire in a tunnel in Weihai city, Shandong province, eastern China, killing 12 people, including 11 kindergarten children.
The driver, six Chinese children and five Korean children were killed.
It remains unclear whether the accident was intentional or the result of dangerous driving.
China is cracking down on transportation risks with extra training and vehicle inspections.
China has seen a number of attacks on elementary school students in recent years, using knives and homemade explosives.
The suspects were generally found to be seeking revenge, either personally or against society at large.
