Bus driver for students with special needs reportedly shared graphic child abuse material online

Authorities in New Mexico have reported that a school bus driver who transported special needs students has been arrested following a tip about potential child sexual abuse.

Patrick Bilbo was taken into custody last Friday at a bus stop associated with Albuquerque Public Schools. His cell phone was confiscated during the arrest.

A spokesperson expressed concern, stating, “This case is especially troubling as it involves someone responsible for the welfare of our most vulnerable children.”

Details from the complaint reveal that Bilbo’s mobile device contained email accounts linked to the sharing of child sexual abuse materials, including graphic videos depicting horrific acts involving young children.

Bilbo was identified through information tied to his accounts, which included his date of birth and last name. He faces significant charges: two counts of distributing visual media related to the sexual exploitation of a child under 13, and another for possessing such materials. One video reportedly associated with him contained disturbing text advocating harm to children.

If found guilty, he could potentially face sentences of up to 11 years for each count.

Martin Salazar, a senior communication director for Albuquerque Public Schools, stated, “We are shocked by the allegations against Patrick Bilbo.” He noted that Bilbo was placed on administrative leave as soon as the school learned of the investigation.

Salazar mentioned that Bilbo had passed a background check when hired in September 2024, and there hadn’t been any prior reports of troubling behavior during his time as a bus driver.

New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez remarked on the incident, stating, “This situation is particularly alarming because it involves someone who is meant to protect our most vulnerable children. We will pursue these criminals with urgency and relentless focus.”
