SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey Remains Silent on Giants’ Pride Night Issue
Buster Posey, the head of baseball operations for the Giants, didn’t address the recent controversy surrounding Pride Night during a press conference on Tuesday.
Posey was asked about the actions of four players that sparked backlash from San Francisco’s progressive fan base, leading to a federal inquiry by the Justice Department focused on MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s response to the situation.
At the press conference, which drew around 30 reporters, Posey stated he would happily discuss baseball-related questions. However, the tension grew, prompting the team’s public relations staff to step in several times as Posey appeared visibly uncomfortable.
He opened the press session with a brief statement, saying, “I want to acknowledge that organizations have shared their responses to Pride Night. We understand that there are strong feelings on this subject. There are different points of view, and out of respect for everyone involved, I’m not going to second-guess that.”
Posey also seemed to indirectly challenge the MLB commissioner in a letter addressed to Senator Josh Hawley, who had expressed concerns about possible discrimination within the league related to religious beliefs but had received no response.
Commissioner Manfred commented that the communication about the special hats worn by three players, who inscribed Bible verses on them, was “insufficient and unclear.” He noted that the players were not informed they were not obligated to wear the hats designated for the Giants’ event, which has occurred annually since 2021.
This year marked the first instance where the Giants couldn’t ensure full participation from their players for the event, which celebrates the local LGBTQ+ community and dates back to 1994, making the Giants the first professional sports organization to hold such a night.
When asked if he had ever expressed objections to Pride Night during his playing career, Posey again chose not to provide an answer.
Buster Posey offers no comment on Giants Pride Night.
