Buttigieg on Kirk shooting: "This affects every American"

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg remarked on Sunday that the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk has “harmed all Americans.”

Kirk, aged 31, was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He was a conservative activist and the founder of Turning Point USA, survived by his wife, Erica, and their two children.

“It’s not just public figures who have reason to be concerned right now,” Buttigieg said. “This season of political violence impacts all Americans because, fundamentally, it harms everyone.” He added that it’s “an attack on individuals and an attack on the country,” suggesting that the political process should address such issues.

Kirk’s murder has drawn widespread condemnation from politicians across the spectrum. Buttigieg specifically recognized conservative Utah Governor Spencer Cox and progressive Senator Bernie Sanders for their recent statements and leadership on the matter.

Governor Cox, who discussed how the situation was handled, encouraged the nation to “choose another path” during a press conference on Friday.

“This is our moment. Will we escalate or will we find the off-ramp?” Cox asked. “That’s a choice we have to make.”

Sanders highlighted recent instances of political violence in the U.S., describing this as “a difficult and controversial moment in American history.” He shared a video on his YouTube channel on Thursday.

“Every American must denounce any form of political violence and any threats, regardless of political viewpoint,” the Vermont senator stated. “We need to welcome and respect differing opinions.”

Buttigieg expressed that he felt “encouraged” by the unified messages, but also emphasized that moving beyond this era of political violence requires collective effort from all Americans.

“In addressing this tragic incident, the real divisions aren’t about left or right, Maga or Democrats,” Buttigieg observed. “What’s crucial is whether actions help or hurt. Are you contributing to a better future for America, or are you further dividing us?”
