Byron Allen’s “Comics Unleashed” to Set Political Tone

Byron Allen recently shared that his show “Comics Unleashed” will steer clear of political discussions when it takes over the late-night Friday time slot previously held by Stephen Colbert on CBS. Allen believes the focus should be on humor rather than political commentary.

“What I do on ‘Comics Unleashed’ is not about politics. I don’t talk about anything current,” he told CNN’s Michael Smerconish. He emphasized that the show aims to be free of any racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, or homophobic content. The goal? Just to be funny.

Smerconish, curious about the potential for political discussions, asked Allen if viewers might expect to find political undertones in the show, which is set to air following Colbert’s 11-year run on “The Late Show.” Allen responded by indicating that he wants the audience to enjoy the comedy without the weight of current events.

Drawing a comparison to Norman Lear’s approach to comedy, Allen expressed a desire to unite rather than divide. He aims to engage viewers regardless of their political affiliations. “I don’t care who you vote for. I’m here to make people laugh,” he said, adding that it’s ultimately up to viewers to decide their political beliefs.

His comments contrast sharply with Colbert’s own approach, which often included political commentary and critiques, especially regarding former President Donald Trump. Colbert’s final broadcast is slated for May 21, 2026, as CBS announced earlier this year that “The Late Show” would wrap up after this season.

Despite this shift, Allen has spoken positively about Colbert, describing him as an “American treasure.” CBS plans to air “Comics Unleashed” Monday through Friday, with thirty-minute episodes commencing May 22. Following that, Allen’s game show “Funny You Should Ask” will be featured.

Reflecting on his show, Allen said he launched “Comics Unleashed” 20 years ago to provide a platform for stand-up comics. “There’s not enough laughter in the world,” he remarked, emphasizing the show’s mission to foster that laughter.
