The FIFA World Cup is definitely capturing attention across the Americas right now. But interestingly, another soccer-related phenomenon is starting to emerge. With the 2028 Summer Olympics approaching, flag football is becoming one of the most anticipated new sports for the Games.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently shared his enthusiasm about this development. He mentioned that many players are excited about the prospect of representing their countries in the Olympics. “There are quite a few players who have expressed that they want to be a part of this,” Goodell said during an appearance on ESPN’s “Women’s Sports Now” last Thursday.
He went on to add, “They’re all competitors and they really enjoy the big stage. I think winning a gold medal—or any medal for that matter—would mean a lot to them. They discuss it frequently.” Goodell is quite optimistic, stating, “So I absolutely believe we can have athletes in the Olympics.”
One player, Josh Allen, who is the 2024 NFL MVP, has shown interest in joining the potential roster of NFL players representing the United States at the upcoming Summer Games. “I’m interested,” Allen told Fox News Digital while discussing a new partnership with a sleep aid brand he’s involved with.
During the conversation, Allen reflected on how watching flag football helped him see the unique skills players showcase in that format. “I always thought it would be amazing to fight for your country. Sure, I’d have to have the skills, but I watched it on TV not long ago and those guys really do move differently. It’s like their hips can maneuver in a way that allows them to dodge effectively,” he observed.
For Allen, the possibility of playing for Team USA and vying for a gold medal would be quite special in his athletic journey. “Let’s take a look. I’d be honored if you did,” he remarked when discussing his interest.
Goodell believes the timing of the Olympic events naturally allows for NFL participation, especially since flag football will be played before NFL training camps kick off. He anticipates that not just current athletes, but also some recently retired stars could take part in this Olympic debut.
The 2028 Summer Olympics are set to kick off in mid-July. A resolution was put forward in May 2025 to allow one player from each NFL team to compete in the Olympics, with exemptions for international players chosen by their teams to represent their home nations.
