Byron Donalds Dismisses Former GOP Representative Running for Florida Governor as a 'Radical Leftist'

David Jolly, a former Republican congressman from Florida known for his strong criticisms of Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that he will run for governor of Florida in 2026 as a Democrat.

In a post on X, Jolly highlighted the state’s current crisis, which he argues is not merely political but a more profound challenge facing Florida. This comes at a time when Florida Republicans, including Trump-endorsed frontrunner Byron Donald, appeared to dismiss Jolly’s candidacy.

Jolly, who served from 2014 to 2017 and became independent after leaving the GOP in 2018, has been vocal against both the current governor, Ron DeSantis, and Trump. He’s also gained attention as a frequent contributor to MSNBC, sharing his critical views on the former president.

Jolly characterized his campaign as uniquely different, stating in an interview that this election will not conform to typical expectations.

It’s worth noting that DeSantis cannot seek re-election in 2026 due to term limits.

Donald did not hold back in his reaction, labeling Jolly as an “anti-Trump, radical leftist” who, in his view, does not align with the values of Florida voters. He accused Jolly of wanting to raise taxes and implement liberal policies, asserting that Florida remains solidly in Trump’s favor.

Trump’s support in Florida was substantial during the 2024 election, showcasing the state’s critical role in his electoral strategy.

Meanwhile, Evan Power, Florida’s GOP Chairman, criticized Jolly, describing him as a “political relic” lacking credibility. He emphasized the success that Florida has enjoyed under Republican leadership, pointing to economic growth, low inflation, and a strong commitment to parental rights in education.

Power went on to say that Jolly had previously lost in elections and would likely do so again, arguing that Florida voters are wary of opportunistic candidates.

Jolly’s bid follows a trend of former Republican candidates in the Tampa Bay area attempting to gain traction as Democrats. For instance, ex-Governor Charlie Crist, a former Republican, ran against DeSantis in 2022 but lost decisively.

Reflecting on their past, Crist and Jolly had faced each other in a congressional race back in 2016, with Crist securing a victory then. After Jolly’s recent party shift, Florida Republicans have dubbed him “Charlie Crist 2.0,” indicating their skepticism about his effectiveness in winning over voters.

Jolly’s and Donald’s campaigns have yet to respond to inquiries about their respective strategies moving forward.
