Cadillac takes their latest step on the path to the F1 grid

The incoming Cadillac F1 Team announced Thursday its latest steps toward joining the grid as a full works team.

TWG Motorsports and General Motors announced Establishment of a new company, GM Performance Power Units LLC, specializing in the production of F1 power units. The new company's goal is to put Cadillac on track for a works operation by the end of the decade.

F1 announced in November that the Cadillac team had been approved to join the grid from 2026.

GM has appointed Russ Oblens as CEO of the new company. Obrenes currently serves as Director of GM Motorsports' Propulsion and Performance Team.

“We are pleased to welcome Russ to this pivotal role,” said Dan Towers, CEO of TWG Motorsports. “His expertise and leadership will help lay the foundation for Cadillac's path to F1. Together with team principal Graham Loudon, they will work to establish new standards of performance and innovation in the sport. He will lead the team.”

“Russ brings a wealth of experience in many championship racing series, leading the way in our proven winner hybrid IMSA Cadillac and Corvette C8.R engines,” said GM President Mark Reuss. We have the technical expertise.” “In F1, we intend to demonstrate GM's engineering and technology capabilities on a global stage, and Russ is the right choice to lead the power unit team that will help us do just that.”

The Cadillac team will use Ferrari power units until its own power unit program becomes operational and will participate on the F1 grid for the 2026 season as a customer operation. GM plans to open a dedicated facility for the new venture near the Charlotte Technical Center in 2026.

“I'm really excited to have the opportunity to build and lead a team that brings American-made F1 power units to the grid,” Oblens said. “GM PPU is currently expanding its team and hiring across all areas of the business.”
