Video Sparks Controversy Over CAIR-CA Leader’s Remarks
A video featuring the leader of a prominent Muslim advocacy group in California has gained significant attention on social media. In it, Zahra Billoo apparently advises her supporters to be “strategic” about how they express certain opinions publicly, leading to backlash and renewed scrutiny regarding the organization’s state funding connections.
The context of the video, which has not been independently verified, shows Billoo cautioning against the public expression of some views. She presents an example: “Imagine your LinkedIn profile saying, ‘I hate all Zionists,'” suggesting that this kind of statement is not wise for a professional platform. “You might share those thoughts in casual settings, but not on LinkedIn,” she explained.
Her comments were met with sharp critiques from various commentators and politicians. Guy Benson, a Fox News political analyst, argued on social media that the implication is not about discouraging hate but rather about being more discreet in how such sentiments are shared.
Republican National Committeeman Harmeet Dhillon also expressed her disbelief with a simple “Wow.” Meanwhile, Christopher F. Rufo from the Manhattan Institute connected the video to broader concerns about CAIR-CA’s influence in California.
With CAIR-CA under increased scrutiny, particularly over its funding—around $40 million in state support in recent years—the group faces allegations regarding its historical ties to organizations like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. CAIR-CA has consistently denied these claims, labeling them as part of a defamation campaign.
In recent actions, some Republican-led states like Florida and Texas have sought to designate CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as state foreign terrorist organizations. Although these state-level designations lack the legal weight of federal ones, CAIR is pushing back, calling the initiatives unconstitutional.
California Governor Gavin Newsom lately criticized rising anti-Semitism and emphasized the need for a collective stand against hate. While his office did not directly respond to the video, they highlighted ongoing collaborations with various nonprofits and community leaders to address these pressing issues.
As the situation unfolds, ongoing dialogue about CAIR-CA’s role and its funding will likely remain in focus. Fox News Digital has reached out to CAIR-CA and Billoo for comments on this developing story.
