Caitlin Clark expresses support for Napheesa Collier and urges for improved leadership in the WNBA

WNBA Insights on Leadership and Player Relations

Kate Clark has been out of the WNBA spotlight since July 15 and hadn’t spoken to the media prior to this week. Yet, it seems she couldn’t avoid the attention just the same.

During an interview with Exit on Tuesday, Lynx forward Napheesa Collier shared some comments from WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert regarding Clark. These remarks suggested that Angel Bart should show gratitude to the WNBA for providing a platform that helped her secure sponsorships, implying that without the league, she “wouldn’t have made anything.”

Clark later addressed the media herself during an interview on Thursday and mentioned she was unaware of Engelbert’s comments until she heard Collier’s statement. She voiced her support for Collier and emphasized the importance of effective leadership as the offseason approaches.

“First of all, I have great respect for Fee, and she brings up some really valid points,” Clark said. “What I think people need to recognize is that we need strong leadership at all levels right now. This is a crucial moment for this league. It’s been around for over 25 years, and that’s genuinely significant.”

At the moment, the WNBA is facing potential lockout tensions between the league and the players’ union. Even before Collier’s press conference, there were already complaints regarding the league’s leadership, especially directed at Engelbert.

Collier’s conference seemed pivotal in the ongoing negotiations, although not necessarily for the better. Reports emerged late Tuesday indicating that Engelbert might resign after the new CBA is finalized.

When asked what she hopes to see from league leadership, Clark was clear about the importance of fostering better player relations.

“It’s all about relationships, and I understand that might be hard to grasp in professional sports,” Clark explained. “Whether it’s the front office, the league’s commissioner, or your teammates, those relationships are crucial in effective leadership.”

“Everyone in professional sports has their own journey. Understanding who they are is key, and I believe that’s very important,” she added.

Given the current state of relations between players and Engelbert, things appear to be deteriorating. This is a tough realization as the league prepares for significant negotiations regarding the CBA, a point reiterated by Clark.

“As I’ve said, we’re at a critical juncture in WNBA history,” Clark stated. “I won’t shy away from that. It’s something everyone is aware of. Those in positions of power have a serious responsibility. We are accountable for the future of this game, shaping the CBA, caring for the players, and ensuring this league thrives for years to come.”
