Caitlin Clark faces criticism as WNBA is about to take off: 'She's just a regular white basketball player'

WNBA’s Tensions Rise Over Caitlin Clark’s Treatment

Tensions are mounting in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) as star player Caitlin Clark faces what many commentators see as targeted abuse during games.

Clark, who plays for the Indiana Fever, has intensified her criticisms of WNBA officiating, especially as opponents continue to play aggressively against her. In a recent statement, she expressed frustration about receiving a technical foul for seemingly minor infractions, saying, “If you’re going to get a technical for handclaps, then you might as well pick a match that’s going to get you suspended.”

The 24-year-old’s passionate gameplay might have contributed to how she’s being treated, yet the league appears primed for an eruption following a physical altercation involving her.

On Monday, during a game against the Phoenix Mercury, Clark narrowly avoided a punch to the face from player Alyssa Thomas, yet somehow ended up being called for a foul. Later in the week, things escalated; Thomas literally struck Clark in the throat without any call made. This incident, along with another one that reportedly injured Clark’s back, seemed to be the tipping point, triggering a wave of outrage in the league, particularly from Clark’s coach, Stephanie White.

“It’s outrageous to receive a fist to the throat,” White remarked after the game, calling it dangerous and unacceptable given that they’re dealing with “generational talent” like Clark.

Sports media figures did not hold back their thoughts on the fouls either. Dave Portnoy, owner of Barstool Sports, shared a clip of the incident, questioning, “What are we doing here?” He criticized the treatment of Clark and pointed out that the attention she brings has been a game-changer for women’s basketball.

Additionally, former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason suggested that Clark should consider playing in another league where she might receive the “royal treatment.” He added that her race and gender might be factors contributing to the disrespect she faces in the WNBA.

Legendary sports host Colin Cowherd criticized the league, highlighting an official poster for its 30-year anniversary that notably excluded Clark, despite her significant impact on the game. On Thursday, the WNBA finally responded by suspending Thomas for one game and deeming her action a flagrant foul.

Despite the recent controversies, Clark remains steadfast in her performance and has been selected to represent the United States in the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics. However, it’s clear that she continues to navigate a challenging landscape in women’s basketball.
