An intense night in Indianapolis culminated in what seemed to be a heated moment between Caitlyn Clark and the referee.
On Tuesday, Indiana guard Kelsey Mitchell sank the ball into the net for a last-minute victory, finishing just a point ahead in under two seconds, though the shot grazed the backboard.
Clark, sidelined due to groin injuries, witnessed her team clinch an 81-80 road win at Gainbridge Field House. As she made her way onto the court, interactions with the officiating crew, particularly referee Amy Bonner, showed signs of tension, with Bonner appearing to gesture towards the bench.
Interestingly, Clark wasn’t the only one from the Fever who seemed to express frustration on that night.
Coach Stephanie White commented, “If it’s physical and you allow it, then both teams will play that way.” She mentioned to Indie Star that there seemed to be inconsistencies in the officiating.
In her first season, White has reportedly engaged with referees multiple times during breaks to address various foul calls.
Aliyah Boston, the Fever’s first overall pick in 2023, accumulated three fouls during the game. There were questionable calls involving Li Yueru from the Wings, pinpointing some controversial moments.
With this loss, the Fever dropped to 18-15, placing them sixth in the WNBA standings.
Clark, who was named WNBA Rookie of the Year, continues to struggle with injuries in her second season. She hasn’t played since July 15th, and there’s no clear indication of when she might be back.
This season, in the 13 games she participated in, Clark averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists.
Next, the Fever will face off against the Mystics on Friday.
