Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark Struggle Early in 2026 WNBA Season
The 2026 WNBA season has not started smoothly for the Indiana Fever or their star player, Caitlin Clark. There were lots of expectations for Clark to bounce back to her rookie form after a frustrating 2025 due to injury. Yet, while she had a promising beginning, her overall performance has been, well, a bit all over the place.
Initially, she was on fire, scoring 20 points or more in her first five games. But then, things took a turn, and she couldn’t hit that mark in four consecutive games. Even in a standout performance against the Golden State Valkyries—where she scored 22 points and dished out nine assists—she couldn’t maintain that momentum. A rematch against the same team saw her struggling, racking up five turnovers and only mustering up six points against the Portland Fire.
Clark’s Inconsistent Play
In a tough loss to the New York Liberty, Clark’s struggles were evident again. She managed a mere 10 points with poor shooting stats: only 28.6% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range, along with three turnovers and five fouls. Sure, she added nine assists and seven rebounds, but it was clear that something wasn’t quite right. It was surprising, really, to see her shoot just 14-of-50 in recent games, with only 6 of those being successful three-pointers.
So far, the Fever’s record stands at 5-5, and their upcoming game against the Washington Mystics felt crucial for regaining some traction—and Clark stepped up to the plate.
A Turnaround Performance
She started strong, scoring 10 points in the first quarter by going 2-of-5 from deep. However, coach Stephanie White kept her on the bench for a significant stretch of the second quarter, limiting her to less than four minutes of play. But even during those limited minutes, she made an impressive assist that had fans buzzing.
By the second half, Clark began showing more of her trademark sharpshooting. There was a moment when she attempted a jump shot that was blocked, but remarkably, she turned it into a rare four-point play. Though the Fever held a nice lead, the Mystics crept back into the game, closing the gap to just a point with only a minute remaining. A foul put the Mystics ahead by a point, but Clark made a crucial contact in the lane and was given a chance at two free throws—though, unfortunately, she missed both.
Still, Clark wasn’t done yet. After a turnover by the Mystics, she made a fantastic half-court pass to set up her teammate for a basket, keeping the score tight.
Then came the decisive moment: after the Mystics momentarily led again, Clark hit a stunning 31-foot shot off a long inbounds pass, clinching a 78-76 victory for the Fever.
Signs of Promise
After a series of lackluster games, this performance felt like a significant step back toward her best. She ended the night with 19 points and impressive shooting stats: 7-for-16 from the field and 4-of-10 from three-point range, alongside 5 assists. It certainly included a memorable game-winning shot.
Thanks to the win, the Fever’s record improved to 6-5 as they look ahead to their next challenge against the Chicago Sky on Thursday.
