Caitlin Clark Set to Return Against the Sparks

WNBA standout Caitlin Clark is ready to hit the court again this Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Sparks, despite dealing with a nagging back injury. It’s an encouraging turn for the Indiana Fever’s star player.

On Wednesday, Fever head coach Stephanie White shared that the team has a bit of a surprising strategy for managing player workloads back-to-back this week.

Indy Star Fever reporter Chloe Peterson inquired about Clark’s status ahead of the game against the Sparks, along with updates on All-Star forward Aliyah Boston’s condition. White explained the Fever’s approach moving forward.

“Yeah, [Boston] will be out tonight,” White said. “Caitlin will play, but will be inactive tomorrow.” So, Clark is set for the game tonight, while Boston will flip that schedule and miss Wednesday’s game but play on Thursday against the Phoenix Mercury.

This decision comes soon after the Fever managed to beat the Las Vegas Aces without Clark, achieving an impressive 84-68 victory.

This season, Clark has participated in 17 games, averaging 21.2 points, 8.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 0.8 steals in about 30.8 minutes per game.

So, what’s the thinking behind this strategy? Well, Clark has always shown a strong desire to play. However, if she wakes up feeling good on Thursday, her absence has already been decided.

There’s a solid argument for keeping the franchise’s long-term health in mind, especially given everything Clark has gone through this season. Coach White is wise to prioritize that, I think.

Yet, deciding to rule her out more than 24 hours ahead of tipoff might come off as overly cautious, especially since it’s hard to predict how she’ll feel post-Wednesday’s game. It’s understandable that Coach White is managing Clark’s minutes closely.

After all, fans pay to see the league’s stars, not to witness players struggle with injury management. Clark is undoubtedly one of the WNBA’s biggest draws, and each game she misses raises questions about whether it was truly necessary.

While White’s plan may ultimately pay off, placing such restrictions on Clark this far in advance could attract criticism.
