Caitlin Clark's clash with Sun players leads to unexpected response from ESPN personality

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith remarked that Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark may soon take on more responsibilities within the WNBA. This comment came after Smith, along with “First Take” panelists Monica McNutt and Christopher Russo, analyzed a heated moment between Clark and a player from the Connecticut Sun. During the game, tensions escalated, particularly when Clark was involved in a confrontation that ended with her hitting the floor thanks to player Marina Mabry.

Throughout the match, Clark and the Sun players exchanged trash talk, which only heightened the competitive atmosphere. Fever guard Sophie Cunningham found herself in a tangle after a rough foul on Jaycee Sheldon, leading to both players being ejected.

Smith reiterated his belief that there’s a certain frustration directed at Clark, yet he expressed no objections to the competitive energy observed at Gainbridge Field House. “It’s important to clarify my position,” Smith stated. “Caitlin Clark is a true asset—a ‘golden goose’—who elevates the game. That said, I think there’s some resentment there.” He aimed to delve deeper into this notion.

He discussed how, during her college years, Clark showcased strong competitive spirit, like when she taunted Angel Reese from LSU after making impressive plays. Smith highlighted that Clark can handle the banter just as much as she dishes it out, comparing her to NBA legend Larry Bird—both for her skill and her formidable presence on the court.

He elaborated that, “It’s not just about playing well; it’s how you engage with the competition. Like Bird, Clark has both the ability to deliver and the confidence to speak up.”

In the aftermath of the game, Cunningham was penalized for her role in the skirmish, receiving a fine for her Flagrant-2 foul. Mabrey’s foul was also escalated to a Flagrant-2, resulting in a similar standard penalty for her.
